Import Car Data in CSV Format

What is the CSV format?

CSV stands for “Comma-Separated Values.” It’s one of the simplest ways to save a table as a file.

Imagine a regular table: rows and columns, such as an address list with name, street, and city. A CSV file contains exactly this table—but without borders, colors, or formatting. Each row of the table is a line in the file, and the individual columns are separated from one another by a delimiter, usually a comma or a semicolon.

How can I import car data into SmartRace?

If you want to add multiple cars at once (for example, because you’re switching from another timing software to SmartRace), the CSV import feature for the car database can help. To access the import dialog, first tap “Cars” in the “Manage” section of the SmartRace main menu. At the top of the overview, you’ll find the “Import” button. Tapping it opens a dialog where you can upload a CSV file. Once you’ve selected a valid file, the next screen will show you which car data has been imported or where the import encountered errors.

Before the data is imported, you can review it and then confirm it again. Note: The imported cars are created as new cars in SmartRace. The import does not update or delete any existing cars.

What format should the CSV file be in?

In order for SmartRace to process the data, you must follow a specific format. This format is displayed in the import dialog when you tap the button to view the data example.

Important:

  • Use only double quotation marks, not single ones
  • Use commas as field separators, not semicolons

Here is an example of valid import data:

name,manufacturer,scale,color,logo,magnets,digital_analog,laps,interval,interval_counter,comment,active
"Name of the Car","Carrera","1:32","#123456","bmw.png","yes","digital","total driven laps, e.g. 10000","maintenance interval in laps, e.g. 3000","laps driven since last maintenance, e.g. 150","A comment for this car","yes"
"Another car","NSR","1:24","","ferrari.png","no","analog","","","","My Comment","no"
